Does "Sleepytime Tea" Really Work?

Some may think that Sleepytime tea can be a natural way to induce sleep, but is this true? Most Sleepytime teas contain chamomile, a medicinal herb used for its calming properties. Chamomile has been used to relieve stress and fatigue, and it may help relax you in preparation for a good night's sleep.

Chamomile Benefits

The flowering herb has been used for centuries to facilitate sleep. It has also been used to relieve insomnia, promote overall well being and encourage healthy sleep. There have been several studies on chamomile teas and if they really work. Some studies have shown that the herb may help with anxiety, but this has not been confirmed. The chamomile works as a sleep inducer and as a mild tranquilizer. The liquid melatonin assists in multiple areas such as lowering heart rate, lowering blood pressure, increasing immune functions and blocking stress responses.

Studies

A study on the efficacy of chamomile extract as a treatment for insomnia was done by BMC Alternative Medicine. The study included 34 patients: half were given chamomile pills and the other half received a placebo. These patients were monitored for one month. The study kept track of these patients total sleep time, time to fall asleep, time to wake up, times waking during the night and overall sleep quality. The trial study found that there were no significant differences between the placebo patients and the chamomile patients.
