ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset Card-to-Cloud CPAP Machine Review

ResMed’s AirSense 10 line has long been one of the most popular series of CPAP machines. Though the line includes several different models, in this post we’ll focus on the new AirSense 10 CPAP Card-to-Cloud version.

You may have noticed a shortage of AirSense 10 machines on the market in recent months. That’s due not only to the Philips Recall that is driving up demand for other machines, but also to a shortage of computer chips. These chips allow for CPAP and APAP machines to have cellular connectivity.

To get around this issue, ResMed developed the Card-to-Cloud (C2C) model, which doesn’t offer a cellular connectivity option, meaning no myAir app compatibility. It does however, include SD card support so you can still record and send your sleep therapy data to your doctor. AND it has all the other features you know, at a lower price point.

AirSense 10 AutoSet Features

Let’s review some of the most popular comfort settings and features that makes the ResMed Airsense line so popular.

AutoSet Algorithm

ResMed’s advanced algorithm is what enables the AutoSet 10 to adjust air pressure dynamically throughout the night. It’s sensitive enough to modify pressure on a breath-by-breath basis.

Event detection identifies apneas and instances of snoring and triggers an increase in air pressure to clear the airways. The increase in air pressure is always kept at the lowest possible level to minimize disturbance and quickly titrates back down once the obstruction is clear.

Built-in Heated Humidifier

With the ResMed 10’s integrated humidifier, users can prevent some of the common issues that can accompany sleep apnea therapy. Dry sinus passages, sore throat, coughs, and congestion can make it difficult to breathe, which makes it hard to benefit from CPAP therapy! Humidification helps break up congestion and prevent the dryness that can cause irritation.

The AirSense 10 is designed with Climate Control to automatically adjust the HumidAir humidifier to your ideal temperature and humidity level. ClimateLineAir heated tubing is available separately to deliver stable temperature and prevent excess moisture in your CPAP mask.

The ResMed AirSense 10 can be used without the humidifier as well. Simply turn off the humidification settings and insert the side panel in place of the water chamber.

AutoRamp with Sleep Onset Detection

New users (and anyone who prefers to ease into CPAP therapy) will appreciate the AutoRamp and Sleep Onset Detection features. They work together to make it a bit easier to get used to.

Your air pressure is low to begin with, and when the CPAP device senses you’re asleep, it slowly increases it to your full prescribed level. So your pressure settings can be crossed off the list of things to worry about as you fall asleep!

SmartStart/Stop

With the Smart/Stop feature, the AirSense 10 Autoset CPAP starts automatically when you put your mask on, and stops when you take it off. Perfect for those times you settle into bed at night only to realize that you forgot to lock the front door or grab a drink of water. No need to turn your machine off and on as you get in and out of bed.

Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR)

The EPR feature is another way the air pressure is customized to enhance CPAP comfort. Having to sleep with a CPAP mask itself can take some time to get used to. On top of that, imagine having to breathe in and out while pressurized air is flowing through it.

In particular, exhaling against incoming air can feel counter-intuitive and sometimes cause a feeling of breathlessness or claustrophobia, especially for new users. The EPR feature toggles air pressure between inhalation and exhalation pressure levels, reducing pressure on the exhale, making it easier to breathe at a rhythm that feels natural.

Ambient Light Sensor

The ResMed 10’s color LCD screen is easy to read with user-friendly controls and an ambient light sensor. As the name suggests, this feature senses the light in the room and will adjust automatically. So when you turn off the bedroom light, there’s no harsh bright light coming from the machine.

AirSense 10 Autoset Cons

The most obvious con of the Card-to-Cloud model is the absence of cellular connectivity. There’s no way to connect to the myAir app, which does it make it quicker and easier to share your sleep therapy data with your provider. However, the process of SD card transfer is a fairly simple one. I think most CPAP users will agree that having access to ResMed 10’s other popular features is preferable to not having access to the machines at all.

Not a con per-se, but this model does not offer the same advanced event detection as the Elite model, so it does not detect more complex conditions like central sleep apnea or Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

Some users have noticed the humidifier water needs to be changed more often than with other machines, due to the smaller footprint of the water chamber. Finally, there is no way to adjust the LCD screen brightness manually. It’s controlled solely through the ambient light sensor.

AirSense 10 Autoset Pros

The ResMed AutoSet algorithm is probably the biggest reason people go for the AirSense 10 line. Because it provides the lowest pressure needed for each user’s individual needs, and increases only when it detects and apnea and snoring event, it’s no surprise that CPAP users prefer it to a fixed-pressure machine.

The whisper quiet easy-breathe motor is literally quieter than a whisper at just 27 decibels. This means an undisturbed night’s sleep for you both you and your bed partner. This machine is compatible with different types of masks, including full face masks, nasal, and nasal pillow masks.

A sleek design, intuitive controls and ambient light sensor make it look more like a smart alarm clock than a CPAP machine on your bedside table. In a nutshell, all the comfort settings included on this machine come together to make CPAP therapy easier and more natural to adjust to, as well as maintain treatment over the long term.

The Takeaway

The AirSense 10 Card-to-Cloud model is a solid choice for anyone who wants to make CPAP therapy more comfortable without dealing with a complicated, expensive set-up. And since wi-fi connected machines are in such short supply, this is a good chance to grab one with the same comfort settings at a lower price.
