What is a Chinstrap for Sleep Apnea?
Chinstraps are often recommended to CPAP users undergoing treatment for sleep apnea. They can enhance the benefits and effectiveness of CPAP therapy by helping to keep your mouth closed during sleep to prevent air leaks and pressure changes.
Do Chinstraps for Sleep Apnea Work?
Dry mouth, air leaks, ineffectiveness, and discomfort are among the most common side effects and complaints during sleep apnea therapy.
During CPAP therapy pressurized air is delivered through your nose and/or mouth and if your mouth opens during therapy air is allowed to escape causing your mouth to dry out, causing avoidable discomfort. Additionally, air leaks cause inconsistent pressure during therapy which reduces the effectiveness of your sleep apnea treatment.
Chinstraps help to keep your mouth closed during sleep, reducing the risk of dry mouth and discomfort, and preventing air leaks from negatively impacting the effectiveness of your CPAP therapy.
How To Use a Chinstrap for Sleep Apnea Therapy
There are various different types of chinstraps for CPAP therapy, making choosing the right chinstrap just as crucial as finding the right mask fit.
Using most chinstraps starts with fastening an adjustable strap over the top of your head (unless the chinstrap straps wrap around your mask's headgear) and around the back of your head.
The straps are then adjusted so that the chinstrap fits firmly around your chin.
Now you’re ready to fit your CPAP mask as you normally would and kick off your sleep with your favorite CPAP machine!
How to Clean Chinstraps
-
Using a mild detergent* and warm, drinking-quality water, gently clean your cushions/nasal pillows to remove any dirt, debris, and oils. Vinegar solutions (3:1, water:vinegar mix) can be used by soaking for 30 minutes to kill accumulated bacteria.
-
Rinse thoroughly.
-
Allow to air dry, avoiding direct sunlight.

How Often to Replace Chinstraps for CPAP Therapy
Once your chinstrap begins feeling like it is losing elasticity, or can no longer maintain a secure seal it will need to be replaced. It is generally recommended to replace after 6 months to prevent under-tightening.
Do Chinstraps for Sleep Apnea Require a Prescription?
Chinstraps can be conveniently acquired WITHOUT an RX!
While some sleep therapy components do require a signed prescription from your healthcare provider – such as CPAP machines, fully assembled sleep apnea masks with headgear – chinstraps for sleep apnea do not require a diagnosis, medical necessity, or any form of paperwork from a licensed healthcare professional.
