The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has guidelines concerning screening for sleep apnea. If a driver goes to their DOT physical and the physician suspects the driver may be at risk for sleep apnea, the doctor may recommend a sleep study.
Sleep Apnea Risk Factors
Common risk factors that the doctor may consider when determining whether or not to recommend a sleep study are:
- body mass index of 33 or greater
- neck circumference greater than 17 inches in men and 16 inches in women
- excessive daytime sleepiness
If you are a driver and concerned you may be screened as needing a sleep study at your next DOT physical, Aeroflow Industrial Clinics offers a free online sleep survey
to help you determine if your symptoms are on par with a sleep apnea diagnosis. At the conclusion of the evaluation, you will have the option to move forward with a sleep study. If you choose to move forward with the sleep study, an Aeroflow Industrial Clinics representative will work with you to get an order from your physician to take an in-home sleep study.
